Behind the Photographs: 110 Years of Community at Casa Fugazi

Casa Fugazi, in the heart of North Beach, is home to Italian Community Services, one of the oldest Italian nonprofits in North America. Since 1916, ICS has stood alongside seniors and families across the Bay Area while safeguarding the Italian language and culture.

Over the years, I have had the privilege of photographing many of its events. Each time I turn my camera toward the people of this community, I realize that a face or a gesture holds far more than the moment in front of me: it holds the quiet work ICS carries out every day.

I am delighted that some of these images accompany Serena Perfetto’s article for L’Italo-Americano celebrating ICS’s 110 years: read the article.
